Der äthiopische Organist, Akkordionist und Bandleader Hailu Mergia war viele Jahre nur Insidern bekannt, er lebt seit den 80er Jahren im Exil in den USA und arbeitet als Taxifahrer. Seine äthiopischen Platten und Kassetten aus den 70er und 80er Jahren sind unglaublich selten, sodass Hailu fast in Vergessenheit geriet.
Dank der Wiederveröffentlichung seiner LP „Tche Belew“ und der Kassette „Hailu Mergia & his classical Instrument“ durch das amerikanische Label „Awesome Tapes from Africa“ ist Hailu Mergia nun wieder in aller Munde, er gibt wieder fleißig Konzerte und bekommt nun endlich auch ein verdientes Special in der Global Beatbox!

Vor zwei Wochen hat uns Stereopaul in seiner Global Beatbox Ausgabe mit Steelpan-Musik aus Trinidad beglückt, zumindest mich hat diese Sendung sehr erfreut und mich daran erinnert, dass ich schon immer mal eine Sendung mit Steelpan-Musik aus Jamaika machen wollte.
Steelpans und Jamaika – das klingt naheliegend, schließlich liegen Trinidad, das Mutterland der Steelpan, und Jamaika sehr dicht beieinander. Doch die Steelpan gehört definitiv nicht in die jamaikanische Popmusik, natürlich gab es auch auf Jamaika für ein echtes karibisches Urlaubsfeeling für die Touristen ein paar Steelbands, in der jamaikanischen Popmusik hat die Steelpan aber eigentlich keine Rolle gespielt.
Um so spannender, wenn dann doch einmal bei einer Reggaenummer eine Steelpan ausgepackt wird…
